Surrendering to Hear from God

This weekend, I am visiting two law school friends in Washington, DC. On the trip up here, I resumed reading “He Speaks to Me: Preparing to Hear the Voice of God” by Priscilla Shirer. I purchased this book over 1 month ago, but never seemed to find time to read more than a paragraph or 2 at a time when I was home.

I haven’t finished the book, but my take on what I have read so far is that one of the main reasons we aren’t prepared to hear from God is because we have our own agendas and we are in our own head space, sometimes doing our own thing and other times turning around in circles trying to figure out what to do. Earlier this week, I had a conversation with one of my friends about trying to get into the right head space despite some of my present frustrations. I wrote a prayer that is helping me get there. One of the earlier chapters of the book contains a section on being a slave to our Pharaohs, which are things on which we dwell – our past mistakes, our present frustrations and future anxiety.  The chapter resonated with me so much so that I read it again, and then I wrote down the verses of scripture that corresponded with each Pharaoh. After I wrote them down on a notecard for my reflection, I decided to write them for the friend I am staying with and leave the card in her desk drawer at work (She spoiled the surprise because she opened the drawer I left it in before we set off on our afternoon of adventure :-)). Side note: She is Tax and Procurement Counsel with the U.S. Senate, so I felt like a proud little sister tagging along   yesterday morning. Now, I want to share the broad titles and scripture with you.

Don’t Dwell on PAST Mistakes
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19)

Don’t Let PRESENT Circumstances Frustrate You
“God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:8)

Don’t be Anxious About Your FUTURE
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

In the day to day grind of everyday existence, life can be overwhelming. There are always things to plan, things to prepare and people who need your attention.  Our senses, especially sight and hearing, are sent into sensory overload on a daily, even hourly basis. But, despite all of that, we somehow still find time to worry and/or think about things we should not have done, things we could have done better, things that need to get done and things that we desire, but are taking forever to happen. When you are dealing with moments such as those, take heart and know that God is faithful! Refer to the verses of scripture above. Write them on a note card and post the note card somewhere you will see it often. Our thoughts hold us captive. As long as we are captive to our thoughts, we are prevented from truly surrendering to God. Pray for deliverance from your personal Pharaohs – only you know what they are. Ask God to allow you to surrender your thoughts to him so that you are open to hear from Him and do his will. If you pray and believe that you have received what you ask for, you WILL receive it.

Peace and blessings
